Mary's Recipe Corner
Layered (Christmas) Dip
Here is an idea for a quick dip, possibly for Christmas parties. The red tomatoes and green onions on top make it look a bit Christmassy. This recipe is from my Mother, and I remember her making it often for parties when I was a kid.
• 2 cans bean dip
• 2 cans guacamole (or make by combining 3 ripe avocados, 2 TBSP lemon juice,1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper)
• 8 oz sour cream
• 1/2 cup mayonnaise
• 1 package taco seasoning mix
• 8 oz cheddar cheese, shredded
• Chopped green onions, include the stems
• Chopped tomatoes
• Chips to serve with (Fritos or Doritos work well)
Spread bean dip in container. Top with guacamole, either store bought or made with the ingredients above. Combine sour cream, mayo, and taco seasoning for the next layer. Then layer with the rest of the ingredients and serve with chips.
Merry Christmas and bon appétit!

For Art's Sake
If you grow up in New Orleans you learn to appreciate art (and food and music and parades, etc.), so it is appropriate to share a bit of art with our readers.
Clementine Hunter (pronounced Clementeen), ~1886-1887 (yes, ~101 years old), was a self-taught folk artist from central Louisiana who lived and worked on Melrose Plantation. The painting below captures the Christmas nativity scene.
As a child, she started working as a farm laborer and never learned to read or write. When she was a grandmother, in her fifties, she began to sell her paintings, which soon gained local and national attention for their complexity in depicting Black Southern life in the early 20th century.
Initially she sold her first paintings for as little as 25 cents. However, by the end of her life, her work was being exhibited in museums and sold by dealers for thousands of dollars. You can read more about her fascinating life and path to notable American artist HERE.
